| Introduction | I had been painting with oils for over 10 years when I first tried encaustic painting. It was something I had always wanted to try, from when I learned about it first in art history class. Eventually I won a grant to buy the supplies with (which are rather expensive) and got started. It was like learning to write with my left hand- totally foreign. The whole process is so different from start to finish. I was ready to see what this change in process would do to my style of painting. It was a real revolution for me. About two years later, when I finally picked my oil painting up again, I realized it had changed the way I thought about painting, in a good way. My style will always be spontaneous, but the layering is more considered. I now am not satisfied until I finish out the details with a micro brush. I enjoy spending my day in the studio moving from oil to encaustic and back again. The two processes are so different, the act of switching back and forth is a real brain exercise, and it keeps things fresh. |
