IntroductionGlobal Marketing Partner, Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, sharing his perspectives on what will be "ahead of the curve"
Favorite moviesThe circumstances under which decision-makers need to achieve success have changed dramatically in recent years. The "new normal" is a volatile, insecure, complex and ambiguous reality. To successfully lead requires a clear set of values and convictions and the ability to rapidly re-focus and reorient entire organizations toward new tasks and convey the aims and measures internally as well as externally. Thus, three capabilities are needed to win: 1. To think ahead of the curve to master future challenges, on top of the demands of daily business Many organizations are consumed by the task of managing its core responsibilities and getting daily business done. Thinking ahead of the curve, realizing imminent change and steering the organization accordingly – this is the role of decision-makers. In the future, the Chief Executive Office will also be the Chief Change Officer. 2. To master the interface between the organization and politics, the media and the public The confines of organizations are fading. Information has become more readily and abundantly available, mainly due to new media. Organizations are under greater scrutiny now more than ever. Meanwhile, politics continues to have a decisive impact on business. All these translate into great opportunities: Those who are willing to read and listen can anticipate risks and gain a competitive advantage. 3. To manage personal reputation and to advance convictions and strengths Most decision-makers stay an average of five years in one position. This leaves them with a narrow period in which to flesh out their concepts and strategies and deliver results. At the same time, stakeholders demand transparency and clarity from leaders. A clearly-defined and well-honed reputation is crucial to inspire confidence. In my experience as a manager and as a consultant, I have supported various companies, governments and NGOs in navigating these challenges.
