| Interests | My parents say I was born asking for books. They read to me constantly. I even made up tales for my dolls and finally dictated a story to my father so I could see my work in print. Getting a book published for library shelves was my ambition, and I was only four years old. I spent many years teaching until I decided to try writing professionally. Very quickly I discovered the reality of rejection and complained to a successful mentor with 100 children's books to her credit. She suggested I consider becoming a waitress. But I was determined. When my husband and I adopted a baby from China, I told her a bedtime story about her imaginary journey down the Pearl River to us. SWEET MOON BABY: AN ADOPTION TALE was published by Alfred A. Knopf. I have not become a waitress. Yet. |
