| Introduction | I have had a fascination with growing food for as long as I can remember, but it started when I used to gather raspberries, strawberries and rhubarb in my grandmothers’ garden in England. My interest in foraging for wild edible plants came a little later, but evoked the same sense of wonder that nature could provide for us. So began my lifelong love affair with food plants that has endured in the vegetable garden for over thirty years. In recent years it has gone even further and I now embrace the whole food garden where food plants aren’t confined to a vegetable garden area, but grow everywhere. This love affair has even resulted in four offspring (books): The Uses Of Wild Plants discusses the diverse uses of most of the plants to be found growing wild in North America. The Vegetable Growers Handbook describes how to grow all of the common vegetables. The Organic Gardeners Handbook describes how to create and maintain a vegetable garden (sowing, transplanting, making compost, saving seeds, weeding). The New Food Garden combines aspects of all of the other books with my interest in green living and describes how to create the complete food producing garden. |
