Introduction Me, My Name and I. For the first thirty years of my life I went by the name "Danny". I still go by the name with my surviving family and a few of my friends. To everyone else I am known now as "Dan". But the name on my birth certificate, the name my mother gave me and which no one has ever called me, except my ex-wife in her moments of temper, is "Nathaniel". It came to my mother in a dream, or so she told me. It means "gift of God" in Hebrew. My father turned his nose up at it at once and chose "Danny" instead. I have sometimes thought about legally changing it. On a number of occasions it has caused problems for me, from the very first time I got a paycheck in the name "Danny" and attempted to cash it with an ID that read "Nathaniel" to the last time a friend bought me a plane ticket. Or when I tell people who know my legal name that I am the author of this blog and of many other articles online. So, to clear up the confusion once and for all, I am Nathaniel - aka Danny, aka Dan - Harper. My middle name has always been Lee.
