IntroductionI’m not always a fan of the word “gringa”. For most of my life growing up in Central America it was a friendly nickname. As for the “perdida”, well, this means “lost” in Spanish. Growing up out on the Bay Islands of Honduras, people used CV radios to communicate back and forth (as opposed to telephones). Each person or place had their call sign on a certain channel. At times, particularly on rainy days, it could be pretty entertaining to just sit and listen, like the “party lines” of old. Every once in a while the radio would crackle to life and we would hear a call like, “Cayos, Cayos, Gringo Perdido”, only he pronounced it more like “pur-deed-oh”. It never failed to get us all chuckling: the way this man referred to himself, conjuring up an image of a blonde, sunburned North American man lost and floating amongst the cays, calling out for help and guidance over the radio! None of us have experienced the globe in its entirety, nor can we always know what to expect from life. So in a way, I suppose, we are all Gringo Perdidos out on our own trails, calling out for tidbits of wisdom and guidance to help us along on our journey.
