| Introduction | I am a 4th generation Black Hills pioneer, six of my G-grandparents were in Lead/Deadwood before 1880. I have lived in the six generation family home for most of my life. Three generations have graduated Lead/Deadwood Schools beginning in Deadwood in 1895 and I was the last in 1967. I attended BHSU and have nearly enough history credits to have the degree but never got the 'paper'. Along with local historian Don Toms, I was one of the grass roots organizers of what became the Black Hills Mining Museum. I also co-authored, edited and provided research for several local history books with Don. Three generations have drawn Homestake paychecks beginning in 1880 through my seven years ending in 1979, 99 years! I drove school bus for the Lead/Deadwood schools for 20 years. That freed up my summers and gave me other day hours to work at the Black Hills Mining Museum, totalling 16 years. I drove trolley in Deadwood for 16 years giving me more opportunity to talk/teach history. I currently am finishing my working years driving Caterpillar haul trucks for Goldcorp Mining Company at the Wharf Resources Gold Mine. |
