| Introduction | This is India, home to the largest democracy in the world; this country is a jumble of different religions, peoples, cultures and ways of life. India is roughly 1/3 the size of the United States yet over 3 times greater in people and home to approximately 150,000 Tibetan refugees spread throughout the Indian sub-continent. For the next year I will be attending the College for Higher Tibetan Studies located in the foothills of the hill station of Dharamsala. The station itself holds much importance to the Tibetan community in exile as it holds the headquarters of the Tibetan government and residence of the Dalai Lama. The city of Dharamsala is in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh or HP, located in Northwestern India. During my time here I plan on learning about everything that has been accomplished during 50 years in exile by the Tibetan Community. From rides on rickshaws to sipping chai on rooftops, I’m looking forward to the new adventures here. This is India, This is the Next Northwest. |
