| Introduction | American Eden carries news and opinion in the muckraking tradition of Ambrose Bierce, who hailed from southern Ohio. The "Adena" region of Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia draws its name from the word meaning 'Eden' or 'primal earth' in Hebrew, Latin, and many Native American languages. The name was chosen by early Ohio governor Thomas Worthington for his Chillicothe mansion, and has been ascribed to the principal ancient mound-building civilization of the region.
