| Introduction | I study stories through different media- from folk song, to audio documentaries to graphic novels- I'm interested in the stories that help people self-discover, self-define and self-reflect. I have been studying Appalachian ballads, or “love songs” and traditional singing since 2008. In the past three years I have spent time studying with Western NC love-song singers including Sheila Kay Adams and Bobby McMillon. Since 2009 I have sung at numerous regional festivals, and have won 1st place awards for my renderings of ballads. To me, singing helps to build the individual's inner strength as well as forge communal experiences...it's incredibly powerful and I plan to get people singing wherever I go! |
