Introduction This blog was meant to explore all the things that confuse and baffle me. Way too often I find myself saying: “I don’t understand anything anymore!!” which I decided could either be a T-shirt or a blog, and I thought the blog might get more views. I'm a humor writer, a culture commentator, and an investigator of all things human, inhumane, and for that matter, para-normal. Which is a nifty segue to my para-normal short story titled "House and Garden" a tale of a woman who buys her own little cottage in the country. But it will not give you a feeling of sweet comfort as you read it. In fact, I hope you'll be terrified. Here’s the Amazon Kindle link where you can check it out: http://ow.ly/cXFu300xyvl It’s an unsettling tale of what happens when a city girl buys a country cottage and sets out to tame the garden, and finds out that nature has other plans for her.
Interests Writing, particularly humor and editorials, scuba diving, music, music, music, traveling to places that engage all the senses; from different countries to any zoo at all; from the Frick in NYC, to a friend's apartment in Cleveland, going to little restaurants that no one knows about, talking to interesting people, reading almost every form of media (your blog, Reddit, the New York Times, the New Yorker, Men's Journal). I like the adventure pieces when a guy flips over on a kayak, or runs out of air on Mt. Everest, or meets a ravenous wolf in the woods, or even stubs his toe if it's funny and well-written. Also always trying to figure out how men operate (not physically - I think I have that down - but psychically); you think we're tough? Men are really tricky.
Favorite Movies Shawshank Redemption, Adaptation, Little Big Man, First two Godfathers, Dr. Zhivago, The Graduate, Jaws, Casablanca, Twelve Angry Men, 2001 A Space Odyssey, Once, Zodiac, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Platoon, ET, You Can Count on Me, The Turning Point, The Shining, Breakdown, The Court Jester, The Game, Romeo and Juliet (the Franco Zeffirelli version), the first Rocky, Hansho the Baliff (saddest movie ever made), When Harry Met Sally, don't like Bergman too much, nor Fellini (sorry movie purists!), Annie Hall, Match Point, The Odd Couple (with Jack Lemmon), Some Like It Hot, The China Syndrome, Erin Brockovitch, Michael Clayton, The Insider, The Out of Towners (with Jack Lemmon), Five Easy Pieces, Reds, The Sting, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Player, In the Realm of the Senses, any James Bond movie with Sean Connery, all three of the recent Jason Bourne movies, Alien, Aliens, Altered States, Catch 22, Carnal Knowledge, American Beauty.
Favorite Music I like the Stones, the Beatles (dark, anguished George was my favorite - not the "sweet" Paul), some Bob Dylan, almost anything Brazilian, "Sing, Sing, Sing", Leo Kottke, Raul Midon, Alison Krause, the soundtracks by Thomas Newman (of course "The Shawshank Redemption", "American Beauty", "The Player" and "6 Feet Under"), Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Luciana Souza, Jobim, one song by the pianist Hiromi - "The Tom and Jerry Show" - incredible playing - what's faster than a 32nd note? Many of those. Clapton, Cobain, piano rags (yeah Scott Joplin!), bluegrass. I also love some hard old rock - "Sympathy for the Devil" turns me on, "Rocky Mountain Way", most anything by Van Morrison, lots of U-2 (although I can't remember any names), "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" (Animals), Todd Rundgren (not really rock). "West Side Story", "The Sting" and "Wicked" soundtracks, Bob Marley, Damien Marley (All Night), Praise You by Fat Boy Slim, Paul Simon (everything), Simon and Garfunkle, Eileen Ivers jazz violin, Toots Thielman, Henry Mancini (soundtracks from "Breakfast at Tiffany's and "Pink Panther"), The Police, Sting, The Who, Vivaldi, Copeland, The Dixie Chicks, Neil Young (some, not all), Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Joni Mitchell, Diana Krall, my friend Joanne Tatham, Dr. John.
