Introduction | I earned a degree at Macalester College, but didn’t allow that experience to get in the way of my education. Serving as a combat marine in Vietnam prepared me for Island Time, tropical storms, and the shortage of women and water, but it didn’t prepare me for pirates, fairy dust, and little boys who never grow up. I endured the Caribbean’s eternal carnival with help from Callwood's Rum and Bomba's mushroom tea—in medicinal doses only. When faced with the ineffable question of where to go when you leave paradise, my answer was to settle on a river in northwestern Wisconsin where my one palm tree is protected by double-glazed windows and where moko jumbies dance among the white pines that still remain after a five-second microburst toppled and topped over a hundred of the largest trees, providing me with a lifelong hobby in landscaping and building-repair. |
