| Introduction | Mike Regan works on his tiling patterns from his home in Hadlock, Washington, which, no surprise, is an octagon. Having dabbled for years making shapes on graph paper, Mike discovered the utility of using a drawing program....and then he went crazy. Using Sketchup as his main design tool, Mr Regan expanded on what he had already discovered and developed many more approaches to the problem and art of tiling the plane. His "day job" also involves polygons, and fitting things together on the plane: He designs and builds polygon housing, and either sells them or rents them out.So far, he has decorated his hometown with two octagon and two twelve-agon houses and many versions of his self-patented Hypershelter buildings.: a greenhouse, a storage unit, a large garage (which presently hosts a 5-ton dump truck) and several modular versions used for art show kiosks. With a jaunty, fast-paced narration, the author presents a clear and readable approach suitable for designers at any level of expertise, from novice to professional, and for numerous media: fabric design, paper cutouts, ceramic tiles, or wallpaper. The creative possibilities are endless. |
