Introduction I was introduced to mechanical pencils in the 3rd grade. The course was Penmanship and we were introduced to cursive writing. The nun insisted we use fountain pens. My grandmother gave me a fountain pen and mechanical pencil set. My interest in fountain pens would wax and wane over the years, but I began a lifelong interest in mechanical pencils. The first pencil was a twist action and the eraser was under the cap. That pencil and several that followed are long lost. The oldest writing instrument that I own and was originally mine is a Hallmark Teak Wood felt tip marker my grandmother gave to me as a graduation present from high school in 1972. It was part of a mechanical pencil, ballpoint pen and marker set. The pen survived my college years but ‘disappeared’ after college. Eventually the wood on the pencil delaminated and it went in the garbage. Hallmark stopped making refill cartridges for the marker so it sits in the pencil cup as a reminder of my grandmother. The quest to find the Perfect Mechanical Pencil began with the loss of the Hallmark. At times, the quest seemed to be over. However, life changes, writing requirements change and the quest begins anew.
