Introduction A photographer, writer, curator and activist, Shahidul Alam obtained a PhD in chemistry at London University before taking up photography. Returning to his hometown Dhaka in 1984, he photographed the democratic struggle to remove General Ershad. Stepping down after three terms as president of the Bangladesh Photographic Society, Alam set up up the award winning Drik agency and the Pathshala media academy, considered one of the finest in the world and the Chobi Mela festival and Majority World agency. Alam’s work has been exhibited in MOMA in New York, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Royal Albert Hall in London and The Museum of Contemporary Arts in Tehran. A public speaker, Alam has presented at the Tate Modern and the Pop Tech conference alongside presidents and Nobel laureates. Winner of numerous international awards, he has chaired the World Press Photo international jury. An Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, Alam is a visiting professor of Sunderland University in the UK. His recent book “My journey as a witness” has been described by John Morris, the former picture editor of Life Magazine as “the most important book ever written by a photographer”.
