Introduction	Singh has been one of the most distinguished police officers of India. He served -- and occupied the highest positions -- in the most turbulent areas of the country: Nagaland, Assam, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Kashmir. Singh dealt with the insurgents in Nagaland, tackled the ULFA (United Liberation Front of Assam) rebels in Assam, fought against Sikh terrorism in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, and contributed to combating militancy in Kashmir. The Government of India, in recognition of his contribution to national security, awarded him the 'Padmashri' in 1991.
