| Introduction | As a construction cost consultant with Davis Langdon, I spend most of my working life dealing with how much things cost; how to make them cost less, or how to make them better and stay in budget. Over my nearly thirty years in practice, I have realized that very few people really want a building: what we want is to live, love and work, and buildings happen to be a useful place for us to do that. That means that every building, and every dollar spent on a building, whether for product - concrete, drywall, carpet, or for service - design, management, operations, must be in the service of the function, making the space more useful, healthier, serviceable.It must also be in the service of the environment as a whole, since that is ultimately where we all live, love and work, along with all the other species and systems. |
