IntroductionI'm a baby boomer, more privilege than curse. The changes in one lifetime are staggering; not the least of those is the status of women in the US. I started to work as a CPA in the 70’s and then as a lawyer a few years later; there were only a handful of women in either profession and no enforceable rights to equal treatment. Since winning the right to vote in 1920, education and opportunity resulted in a critical mass of women who recognized their value and found a collective voice. With that collective voice came power. In travels through the mid-East and Africa, I’ve been confronted over and over again with cultures where women are still little more than property, with little or no chance or means for self direction. Those barriers to women are exponentially higher than those we encountered in the U.S. The regression of rights for women in some of the Middle East countries is particularly disheartening. Ultimately, I decided it was just too depressing and too overwhelming and would never go back. But since then I’ve met several people who are working to help women find their value, find their voice, find their power. I want to be one of those. Something is better than nothing.
