IntroductionCritical Psychology features reporting, commentaries and opinion pieces on current events, politics, arts, media and contemporary issues viewed through a critical psychological lens. This emphasis on critical psychological reflection is broadly informed by the interdisciplinary school of critical theory that originated at the Institute for Social Research that originated in Frankfurt in the 1920s. The Institute for Social Research consisted of a group of social scientists who were interested in critiquing and changing society from an interdisciplinary perspective which synthesized sociology, history, political science, anthropology and psychology. An important premise of critical theory is that all theories are shaped by social and cultural ideologies and that for this reason it is important to critically analyze theory from sociological, historical and political and psychological perspectives that can potentially shed light on the role that that theory may play in perpetuating mainstream cultural ideologies that may play a role perpetuating the interests of the privileged.
