| Introduction | When I was five or six, I was fascinated by the nursery rhyme about the day of the week people are born: "Monday's child is fair of face..." I was born on a hot Thursday in Texas, and when I learned that "Thursday's child has far to go," I wondered what that could possibly mean. Now I know that I'm on a long journey with many strange twists and unpredictable turns. The road has been scary and lonely at times, but I have found supportive, loving people wherever I have traveled. It took me a long time to find the person who would be willing to share my journey, and that has made it infinitely more interesting and comforting. And then there's Harper, my beautiful, funny, smart, action-packed daughter from China, who may be the reason I have come so far. I hope I have miles to go before I sleep. |
