| Introduction | By profession I am a geologist and have taught and explored the geological mysteries for fifty years. Every mineral and rock has a story to tell; a story of its origin, in space and time, from the beginning of the nebular origin to the present. They are an essential foundation and integral part of the nature’s beauty, bounty and occasional fury. Its understanding enhances the appreciation of the beauty of the landscapes we cherish. Travelling propelled by curiosity enhances understanding of people, cultures civilizations and their rise and fall in the historical ebb and flow. The geological underpinning of the landforms, its resources or lack thereof, have greatly affected the course of history, customs, religions and the idea of sacred and profane. Understanding this fascinating interaction enhances the appreciation of what we consider as “the other”. Wars and discords are essentially rooted in greed; cultivated ignorance rooted in hubris and prejudiced view of others. Besides geology, I have written and given talks about understanding of cultures and religions in general, particularly about the various trends and factions in Islam; war and peace, and other eclectic subjects. |
