About me

Gender Male
Occupation family doctor
Location Bainbridge Island, Washington, United States
Introduction I am a 56 year old family physician who has practiced primary care in the United States for 28 years in a wide variety of settings from rural New England and South Carolina, to urban Chicago and metro Seattle. I have witnessed the delivery of superb medical care and I have also seen patients denied the very basic standard of care for lack of health insurance or financial resources. It is this denial of health care access and in a broader sense, the denial of the human right to health care that I wish to address in this blog, drawing both from my extensive experience in the US and from my new experiences in a fundamentally different delivery system such as that found in New Zealand where I will be working as a "roving locum" for the next 3 months.
Interests Health care delivery systems and their effect on direct provision of primary health care and on the lives of the patients themselves. Sailing, hiking.
Favorite Books Arctic Dreams by Barry Lopez, The Healing of America by T.R. Reid, Peeling the Onion by Guenther Grass, The Coming of the Third Reich by Richard J. Evans, Blink by Malcomb Gladwell, Frozen Earth by Doug MacDougal, Passage to Juneau by Jonathan Raban, Moby Dick by Herman Melville, and all 21 novels in Patrick O'Brien's Aubrey/Maturin Novels
