Introduction I am, or was, a fourth generation coal miner. There's not really much to tell about me. While I did decently well in high school I didn’t attend college. Instead I chose to forge my own path which often led to failure. My only successes in life have been marrying a wonderful lady and becoming the father of two beautiful children. I worked in the mines until a fire took all of our worldly possessions and gave us a much clearer perspective on life, love, and happiness. For our children's sake I left the mines and we set out upon an adventure, seeking a better future for them outside of the coalfields. Despite our new found happiness, homesickness still envelopes me and I ponder the reasons we had to leave our mountain home of ten generations. Through my blog "The Thoughtful Coal Miner" I hope to shed light on the reasons we left and the problems which continue to plague my fellow Appalachians. I hope in some small way that my experiences and views will enlighten others whose lives seem helplessly intertwined with the coal industry, an industry which knows no bounds in abusing their political and economic powers.
