You know what I'm saying! And you grab yours and point at him, and you say, yeah dog, I know what you're saying! Then the DJ and the music stop. All eyes are on you. He looks at you, you have never seen such anger: Sir, he says in obvious restraint, did I hear you say that yes, you do know what I am saying? He looks if anything, a little angrier. You are stunned. He continues: Sir, the reason I take obvious umbrage is because my statement is a purely rhetorical statement which requires no rejoinder, in fact it is a sign of great disrespect to say...what you said. Know What I'm saying? You freeze, every muscle tense. Of course, you say nothing, you finally understand: it is all rhetorical, to take it literally is to hurt, to cause pain in the soul of the excited speaker who has said "you know what I'm saying?" about 6 times in 12 seconds. You get it. You stand there proud, like the Tin Soldier when thinking of the ballerina. Silently, you weep. |
