Introduction I have been the Executive Director of the California Coastal Commission since 1985; served on several national/international panels dealing with coastal conservation policy; elected School Board Member; Chaired community action organizations; and campaigned for Single Payer Health Care. A cancer survivor, I am again in the throes of this insidious disease. In the hope of helping others, in addition to its intrinsic therapeutic value, I write about the importance of active personal participation in healing and one’s own health care, as well the critical connection between positive attitude, philosophical fundamentals, humor, hope, spirituality and the body’s ability to resist, fight and recover from disease. Experienced as a long-time advocate on the frontline of environmental politics, I have recently been drawn into the arcane world of effective and equitable delivery of health care. Leaning into the traces, I live love mindfully and try always to bring good will, humor, integrity, purpose and meaning to my daily doings. As the glow of my sunset brightens, I strive to embrace its approach with grace and dignity, with non-fear, equanimity and gratitude in my heart.
