IntroductionAbout "Fearless Fosdick:" When I was in officers training (late 1940s) in the navy, we all had nicknames in my crowd. My first roommate was "Weary" Ward, a very slow speaking product of Memphis, TN. My next, and only other roommate, was Peter "Sancho" Sarris, from Antigo, WI. He was named after Don Quixote's faithful companion, Sancho Panza. Since I was a great fan of comic strips, particularly "Li'l Abner," I was given the nickname, "Fearless Fosdick," after the most useless detective in the world, who occasionally turned up in that comic strip. The navy was famous for it's "white glove" inspections, during which the inspector would find any spec of dust in our room. Hilariously, one day he missed the labels, Sancho Sarris and Fearless Fosdick over the entrance to our room. I'm not sure what the punishment would have been for defacing military property if they had been noticed. Probably another captain's mast...not that funny!
