Introduction I was born in Guthrie, Kentucky to Robert and Anna Warren. I have 2 younger siblings, Mary and Thomas. I went to the Guthrie School from age 6 to age 15, when I graduated. My mother didn't think I was ready for college, though, so I went to Clarksville High School in good ol' Tennessee. After a year there I graduated and then entered Vanderbilt University in the fall of 1921. I graduated from Vanderbilt in the summer of 1925 and then went to the University of California, planning to become a teacher. In 1927, I received my Master of Arts. In 1929 I was wed to Emma Brescia, but it was not to last. We got divorced in 1951, and by the end of 1952 I had married Eleanor Clark. Together we had two children, Rosanna and Gabriel. Throughout my career as a teacher I taught at numerous colleges and universities, including Vanderbilt, Yale, and Louisiana State University. During my lifetime, I published sixteen volumes of poetry, ten novels, a book of short stories, and several other works. My novel, "All the King's Men," and two of my poetry volumes each won a Pulitzer Prize. In the 1950's I moved to Connecticut, where I lived until my cancer-caused death in 1989.
