Introduction Spongebelly was the abusive nickname for the Saukie warrior and paddler in Kenneth Roberts' historical novel, Rabble in Arms. He led the annoying digression of a trip from the Revolutionary battlefields of Lake Champlain and the upper Hudson River into the Midwest wilderness, surprising his unwilling white captives with skills and humanity that were somehow never acknowledged. No relation to the SquarePants cartoon character.
