IntroductionJust before my 50th birthday, I went off to the University of Newcastle upon Tyne to do a 4 year degree in Folk and Traditional Music. I followed this up with an MA in Community Arts at the University of Cumbria and have enjoyed working as a community arts practitioner since then. Recently, I jumped at the chance to change direction completely. Now approaching my 60th birthday (February), I'm starting my next decade as an Upholsterer. I've just begun a placement, organised by the North of England Civic Trust Heritage Skills Initiative, as an 'Upholsterer's Apprentice' with Stephen Ball Upholstery in Cliburn, Cumbria. My blog will follow my adventures as I begin this unique opportunity, learning traditional and contemporary upholstery skills whilst contributing to the restoration of a 1930s Gresley carriage for Stainmore Railway Company at Kirkby Stephen East by upholstering 26 pairs of seats. By Spring 2013, I hope to launch my own upholstery business in the North Pennines.
