| Introduction | This blog is for my West African trip. If you're wondering about the name, aulacodes are funny rat-type things that are commonly eaten in West Africa. When Dave and I were waiting for our Benin visas, we flicked through a big book about Benin's 'politique et economique', and found pictures of these strange giant guinea-pig-like things, with some accompanying text that suggested they were being bred for food, but also as pets, with particularly emphasis on breeding the pet ones with white fur... well, you had to be there. Of course, I'm also wondering if I will end up eating one on this trip - it seems fairly likely. |
| Favorite movies | Trust, High Art, Cyclo, Blade Runner, Eternal Sunshine... |
| Favorite music | Hip hop, especially involving nerdy Jewish people from New York, but also old school shit in general. And now hiplife too. Word! |
| Favorite books | So far on this trip I've read obligatory W.African themed novels: The Viceroy of Ouidah by Bruce Chatwin and The Heart of the Matter by Graham Greene (definitely not one of his best). And now I'm grappling with Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon - difficult reading on hot crowded tro-tro journeys. |
