| Introduction | I was born in the Deep South to Midwestern parents who quickly moved to the more shallow Southside of Washington DC where I spent the bulk of my youth sailing on the Chesapeake Bay and playing soccer. Somewhere in there I managed to become an Eagle Scout and gain admission to the US Coast Guard Academy, where I joined the Offshore Yatch Racing team and picked up a never used engineering degree. After graduation, I swapped the sailboat for an icebreaker headed to Antarctica. One year later I drifted over to the Caribbean as part of our nation’s ‘War on Drugs,’ taking brief a detour through Navy flight school to get a brand new Blackhawk. Four years later, I started looking to ditch the body armor; so I headed North … to Alaska … where I flew Search and Rescue missions out of Kodiak. Now, my sea stories began with: “It was a dark and stormy winter’s night …” After a few conversations with the man upstairs, I left the Coast Guard and returned to my wife’s hometown. With the help of my GI Bill, I reinvented myself as a tech geek working on backend data systems …. And yes … that IS as boring as it sounds, but I am okay with that. |
| Interests | Growing up as a preacher’s kid, with a long family history of preachers and missionaries, it should come as no surprise that I have a strong interest in religion and theology. After I joined the Catholic Church in my 20's, I started teaching CCD for nearly three decades before I entered formation to become a permanent deacon (while also joining the Dominican Order of Preachers fraternity/3rd order) and was ordained in Sept 2024. This blog picks up at that part of my story. |
