Introduction After four years of all-you-can-eat Val food and 18 years of parent-cooked food before that, we were daunted by the prospect of having to fend for ourselves after Amherst. A trinity of books read in quick succession in that first summer after graduating greatly changed both the way we think about food and about life: The Good Cook (Anne Willan), The Omnivore's Dilemma (Michael Pollan) and Guns, Germs and Steel (Jared Diamond). We hope that our posts reflect the intellectual legacy of these books. We're going to try this as a husband-wife team effort. We both take turns cooking, Sawa takes the photos and I (Pat) write the posts. We'll try to post one Japanese meal, one non-Japanese meal, and one Sunday treat a week if we can!
