About me

Industry Non-Profit
Occupation Educator and writer
Introduction Welcome. I am an educator with an earlier career in finance and financial conferences/writing. As a mother of three adult children and former teacher in a well-supported suburban high school, I know that education is the passport to a life of choice and satisfaction. In 2009 a series of events led me to volunteer at a small, community-based center for teenagers outside of Moshi, Tanzania. The following year I collaborated with fellow teacher/volunteers, Jillian Swinford and Kerri Elliott, to form EdPowerment, a 501c-3 non-profit. I now work full-time to implement our mission: creating educational opportunities for struggling teenagers and intellectually disabled in this area. Every year, my fellow directors and I spend time in Tanzania and as of June 2014 Kerri Elliott has returned for two years to develop our programs, particularly that of Autism Connects Tanzania, alongside our local staff. This consistent, hands-on and personal approach has secured our impact. This blog chronicles our experiences and shares the stories of the people we meet and lives we touch as we continue our mission.
