| Introduction | I've been a print journalist – photographer, editor, columnist and reporter – since my 16th year, 1956, when The Grand Rapids Herald hired me as a sports stringer and copyboy. After Regular Army enlistment (active duty 1959-1962; 16 months in Korea; honorable discharge 1965), I joined Ruling Class Media full-time but was drawn to the alternative press. My next three decades spanned both realms and won a dozen awards. I was the investigative reporter for The Jersey Journal; news and photo editor of The Morris County Daily Record; editor-in-chief of Art Direction magazine; a key United Press International stringer in Tennessee, New Jersey, New York City and Washington state; founding photographer of The Seattle Sun; the social-documentary photographer for Beth Israel Hospital's free clinics (NYC) and for my book on the Counterculture, “Glimpses of a Pale Dancer.” But in 1983, as "Dancer" neared completion, arson destroyed all my life's work and killed my career. Yet I still photgraph and write, mostly as a blogger or as the founding editor of the monthly newsletter that the 40-unit senior housing complex where I've dwelt since 2004.
