Introduction Russell Perkins admits that he had always thought of photography as a hobby and not something that could actually be done as a career. He developed his basic skills using a Pentax K1000 which was given to him by his father and his true interest in photography was sparked during a trip to the USA at age 18. Upon returning home to Sydney, Perkins completed Certificate IV in photo imaging and a Diploma of Photography, both at the Nepean Institute of TAFE, in 2007. Since then, he worked at Mammoth Studios for three years as assistant to the principal photographer, and his mentor, Joseph Saw. “I am now doing much more freelance assisting to get as much knowledge and experience from those professionals I spend my nights researching,” he says. Currently, Perkins is focusing his energy on shooting fashion and editorial, as well as working on numerous test shoots. One of his personal goals is to shoot an editorial spread for a major magazine in the next three years before he turns 28, but he says “My ultimate goal would be to one day be represented by a reputable agency, and to be proud to say I survive well in a volatile and competitive industry doing what I love everyday.”
