| Introduction | I’ve been cooking professionally since right out of high school, 22 years. I studied a semester of English at the University of England in 1988. I grew up in Northern California, with constant exposure to Napa Valley. I got five classes away from a B.A. in English when my fiancé Janet encouraged me to chase after my dreams of chefdom, so I moved to New York to attend The Culinary Institute of America. I have always had her support. We spent eight months apart during our second year of marriage so that I could finish culinary school. We could not afford to both move back to N.Y. We have now been married nearly fifteen years and have two wonderful children, Madison 10, and Hunter 7. Hunter, incidentally, is named after Hunter Sauce, a traditional classic. I have a playlist on my iPod titled “Kitchen Tunes” with over 100 personally selected food-related songs from punk to jazz. My son and I dressed up as chefs to attend the sneak preview of Disney’s Ratatouille. Food and cooking are a metaphor for life, for the joys of my life. |
