| Introduction | A few years ago, I decided that my life had room for one more futile gesture, and so I dusted off an old dream and began to write plays. I’d done some acting and directing — long ago and far away. But, though I’ve been a writer all my professional life, I never found the time, or the voice, or the courage, to write for the stage. Well, I told myself, if not now, when? And so I sat down at the computer with an idea that had been germinating for nearly a decade. The result was Renaissance, the half-real, half-imaginary story of an encounter between Leonardo, Michelangelo, and politics in the 16th and 21st century. Renaissance was recognized with an Oregon Literary Arts fellowship and was named a finalist for the 2008 Oregon Book Awards. In January 2009, I had the pleasure of being awarded a playwriting fellowship from the Oregon Arts Commission. Renaissance was followed in late 2008 by Next Train to Moscow, which was followd in mid 2009 by Good Citizen. I expect to finish my latest, The Smallpox War, in early 2010. |
