IntroductionMy name is Michael Harcourt and I am a New Zealand teacher in a co-ed, non-uniformed, urban, progressive school. I am particularly interested in how the insights of complexity thinking can work in my classroom. I am also interested in developing the idea of a critical pedagogy of place for my school. Currently I am influenced by educators such as Jim Neyland, Brent Davis, David Gruenewald and Neil Postman. I am also interested in history education and developing an ecological philosophy of history teaching. One interest I have is connecting history education, complexity thinking and place-based education. Currently I am exploring spatial theories of the past and what this could mean for history teachers. I oppose the behaviourist, technicist and overly bureaucratic obsession with assessment and managerial approaches to education that pervades schools and classrooms at the expense of a more humane form of education for our students.
