| Introduction | About a century ago, a deer named Oscar roamed the woods of east Texas. He didn't know his name was Oscar, but that's of little consequence. Today, he hangs on the wall of my study. His head, at least. The man who shot Oscar passed him on to his grandson Bucky. When Bucky died of cancer a few years ago, I inherited Oscar. Oscar's age shows, but he watches over me, ever the vigilant sentry. And when I miss Bucky, I just look up, see Oscar and remember the good times Bucky and I had. The bad ones don't really matter. They were part of the good ones, in the end. Oscar reminds me that even bad times can be good. |
