| Introduction | I am a traditional wooden schooner of the 'Chebacco' type built for the New England fisheries in the 18th and early 19th centuries. I am a replica of a schooner named FAME which was built in Gloucester around 1811. The original FAME was bought by a group of Salem sea-captains and converted to a privateer when the War of 1812 broke out. FAME made arguably the first legal captures of the war, and had a successful career capturing both British merchant vessels and American smugglers. FAME was caught in a storm and wrecked in the spring of 1814 while cruising off Nova Scotia. As a replica of this historic vessel, I take the paying public on cruises out of Salem. I am also available for private charters, and host a summer day camp for children ages 8-14. |
