About me

IntroductionCMI aims to relieve poverty by supporting the expansion of microfinance services to the 395+ million families who lack access. CMI provides established microfinance institutions with volunteers and capital to expand their services. We believe in empowering students as agents of global change. Thus, supporting international service in microfinance is at the core of our operational values. CMI is also based on the idea that the classroom should serve as a place to learn about AND solve global problems. Thus CMI operates via a course at the Kenan Flagler Business School, where students examine issues in microfinance and make investment decisions based on this education. CMI’s Peru Project is made possible by our partners, HELP International. HELP is a non-profit dedicated to helping eliminate poverty by sending American volunteers to work in the developing world. HELP has lent us their years of expertise and their solid reputation. Jennifer Boehme-Kumar, HELP’s Executive Director, has trained our volunteers in safety, cultural awareness, and team-building. We extend great thanks to our partners, HELP International (www.HELP-international.org).
Favorite moviesThis summer, eleven student social entrepreneurs from UNC Chapel Hill will be traveling to Puno, Peru to invest in micro-entrepreneurs. They will be working through Prisma, a local Peruvian microfinance institution (www.prisma.org.pe) and other local microfinance institutions. Students will also be working with locals in other capacities as they identify community needs that CMI can fulfill, such as helping them create a new soccer field or volunteering at the local orphanage. Throughout the summer, CMI's social entrepreneurs will be adding stories, letters, and photos from Peru to this blogsite.
