Introduction Senior Architect and PhD Student at MIRIAD, Cristina Rodrigues is the founder, coordinator and responsible for the Research Project “Villages in the Interior of Portugal” developed by CR Architects in partnership with MMU, Manchester Metropolitan University, School of Landscape Architecture and Penela Town Hall, Portugal. Cristina Rodrigues research focuses on new and purportedly sustainable forms of rural design that can help to combat human and land desertification in the context of a world undergoing accelerated processes of globalisation. Human Desertification is a problem that concerns all the Interior of Portugal. This problem is shared by several different countries located in the South of Europe.
