| Introduction | I am from dirt roads, artesian wells, and lake houses, from The Duck Farm, and Dick’s Bait Shop. I am from the gray house with the totem pole, raft full of girls, fishing poles and worms, long circle driveway, tadpoles and fireflies in summertime, rotten tomato fights in late autumn, ice skating in winter, and softball in the spring. From skate keys, bicycles, popsicles and root beer. I am from the bleeding heart, messy poplar, and supple willow, the half manicured perennials and blue spruce crawling along woodchips. I am from seaweed and duckweed. I am from summer Sunday mornings spent in the cathedral of garden weeding, winter Sundays listening to “Breakfast with Sinatra” and Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong melodies dancing in the air.
