Introduction | Though Indian widows no longer jump on their husbands' funeral pyres and join them in death, widowhood is still not a pretty picture for many Indian women. It is now linked with rejection and seclusion, with poverty and deprivation. When their husbands die, many Indian women, shunned by family, travel to the religious city of Vrindavan, India, where they spend the remainder of their lives in solemn prayer and poverty. From Dec. 7, 2006, to Jan. 2, 2007, I will be working with a Vrindavan organization--Food For Life Vrindavan--to do a photo project on the widow community. I will also be doing photographic work on the organization's Sandipani Muni School, which cares for and educates disadvantaged children from Vrindavan. Here I will share my thoughts, experiences, and, I hope, some photos. |
