Introduction	The Rescue Project (located in Maues’s New District) has originated from a heart’s desire to reach out further into those ‘dark’ areas of Maues. One year many children were enrolled at the Living Word School from this area but the drop-out rate was nearly 100% because the distance from the New District and the Living Word School was considered too far to walk in the 32°C+ heat and humidity of the Amazon, gang lands had to be crossed and parental apathy! If they can’t or won’t come to us, we will go to them! The New District is a real ghetto area of Maues where many people fear to enter even during daylight hours. There is massive unemployment in the area with most streets having their own gangs, traffickers, pushers, prostitutes. Along with the drug problem goes child neglect and sexual abuse. BUT all this will change!
