Introduction	The quality of light expressed in the paintings by Rena Powell show her love for the land in her native Wrightsville Sound area and have become a unique attribute to her work. Her focus has been "plein air" or outside oil painting on small panels using a French easel around Wrightsville Beach, Southport, and Bald Head Island. Recently, her process has began to include studio work using the plein air studies and photographs as a guide for larger works. She has strived to master expressive brushwork, the use of "broken color", and texture to convey an emotional connection to the environment and community in which she grew up.
