Introduction At Barnard, a teacher told me I had the lowest high school average in my freshman class. Spurred, I knocked myself out and won the only prize open to freshman. The summer before my junior year, I was orphaned. That turned me overnight into a quick worker. Later, I met a captivating former Jesuit, whom I agreed to marry after an eight-hour courtship. I found myself a faculty wife at Colgate, with nothing to do except ingratiate myself with other faculty wives. I had opinions and expressed them--flunking every gathering. In that very cold climate, I took to making chocolate sauce from scratch and writing seriously. I still write seriously--the seriousness leavened by humor. Fact is, I'm a pretty funny lady. Also a happy one, partly because I see--and delight in--God’s funny side. I’ve had three novels and two non-fiction books published. But now most of my writing centers around God, a subject that’s always risky. but very exciting to me. I've written 35 stories about the women in Genesis and just finished my spiritual autobiography, which I call Nobody's God. I dearly hope both the Genesis stories and my story will be published. They’re the best writing I've ever done.

Why do you think honeydew is the money melon?

Because, like savings, a good-sized portion is very satisfying.
