Introduction | At Barnard, a teacher told me I had the lowest high school average in my freshman class. Spurred, I knocked myself out and won the only prize open to freshman. The summer before my junior year, I was orphaned. That turned me overnight into a quick worker. Later, I met a captivating former Jesuit, whom I agreed to marry after an eight-hour courtship. I found myself a faculty wife at Colgate, with nothing to do except ingratiate myself with other faculty wives. I had opinions and expressed them--flunking every gathering. In that very cold climate, I took to making chocolate sauce from scratch and writing seriously. I still write seriously--the seriousness leavened by humor. Fact is, I'm a pretty funny lady. Also a happy one, partly because I see--and delight in--God’s funny side. I’ve had three novels and two non-fiction books published. But now most of my writing centers around God, a subject that’s always risky. but very exciting to me. I've written 35 stories about the women in Genesis and just finished my spiritual autobiography, which I call Nobody's God. I dearly hope both the Genesis stories and my story will be published. They’re the best writing I've ever done. |

Why do you think honeydew is the money melon?
Because, like savings, a good-sized portion is very satisfying.
