IntroductionI joined Ranelagh Harriers, based in Richmond, Surrey, in 1974. It gave me something to do socially between cricket seasons. Gradually the running took over, particularly as my (French) wife Claudie hated cricket. Improvements then came gradually with consistent year on year training. I also became involved with Chris Brasher, arranging running tours to New York and Barbados for many years; then being part of the birth of the London Marathon. John Bryant's history of the race records five people sitting down in The Dysart Arms to discuss the viability of such a race, based on experiencing New York: Messrs Brasher, Disley, Rowland, Hanscomb & Wright. Yep, blame me for all the suffering each April, especially as I was a pioneer of the course layout! As well as running the first two Londons, I also drove the lead vehicle a few times. In 1990 I relocated to Gloucestershire and joined Cirencester AC. My main focus is now in the west country where as well as running, I'm trying to pass on some of my experience to others and have coached/mentored three athletes to international vests with three more capable of following suit.
