| Introduction | Kayla's intent is to create in her work the wonder and connection between storytelling and image making as narrative, by bringing the images of her own imagination to her art. Utilizing the plastic qualities in both clay and metal, metal in its malleability and clay in its plasticity; these qualities inform each other as she explores the form language in both. She makes these objects to bring cultural vitality, to remind herself of the humanity that is common in our hearts. She derives inspiration from the body, forms that reference tenderness, protection and the energetic building blocks of creation; orchestrated by the stories she conceives. She signifies her work with energy of healing, mystical power and vibrancy. Consonant with the imagery she suggests arise volumes that allude to an intimate containment. She crafts items that are of everyday and of ritual use - items found in the home, with the intention that they will uplift, spark interest and give meaning to the person who uses them. Kayla attended The University of the Arts as a BFA crafts major where she graduated with honors, focusing in both ceramics and metalsmithing. |
