| Introduction | For years I dreamt of living in in Provence. The beauty of the area where I now live, Les Alpilles, has amazing natural sights; the mountain ranges and ancient trees, wide skies and extraordinary wild life. Everyday I see the images in real life that were captured on canvas by Van Gogh, Cezanne and others - the irises, olives, cypress pines, sunflowers and almond blossom. I do all the typical things that is custom in a French village - ride my bicycle to collect the bread in the morning, stop and talk to the older people in the street about the weather: the wind is always a major topic of discussion and how long it will last this time? Dogs wander without leads and are known to all the locals, children run and skip in the street and say Bonjour, and there are no rules that cannot be massaged with a bit of a blind eye or a drop of common sense. Ah, the pale pink wine, the tasty olives, to die for cheeses and magnificent light. Yes, it is paradise! I miss my family and friends and the ability to totally fit in but travelling back to my homeland is only a long flight away and for an outsider I have found that if a willing smile is given and accepted then half the battle is over! |
